VIN plates & M plates. What use are they?

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Low n slow, Jun 11, 2013.

  1. Don't think it was.

  2. I'm surprised plod joined up the dots on this one. ID removed, in a field, if it wasn't recovered quickly it would have had a new ID put on it and a scrapper sold for parts.

  3. Yup i have a feeling id taken off so if all went well a knackered bus's ID could be transplanted on. Barstewards!!

  4. Are there any vw sellers in the near vicinity??

    ;)

The problem is getting a new VIN plate.
It's illegal to make them as far as I know.

It's not illegal to make / supply etc new vin plates or engine numbers, its illegal to falsify them

  12. My mate text this to me after one of his googles looking for some info...

    --------

I didn't know this did you!!...
If your VW bus was registered before August 01 1980 then it does not require a Vin number.

So if you would like to know were your original
Vin number is, crawl under the bus below the drivers seat and the out rigger that runs from the main chassis to the inner sill that supports the floor beneath the seat, has the Vin number stamped to the rear side of it.
You will have to scrape off all the crap and take it back to the original paint work or bare metal but it is there.
Unless its been repaired i.e. welded due to rust or cut out.

CAN ANYONE CONFIRM THE ABOVE AS BEING TRUE?

Your MOT station cannot refuse to test it they have to leave the Vin number out or put the registration number in its place and advise the customer.

IT'S TRUE ABOUT THE MOT BIT COS THAT'S WHAT I HAD TO DO!

I dunno if the source of info was an official site or not and he can't remember, I bet there are a few clever peeps on here who could confirm one way or the other on the vin number!

Interesting. Would be good to know if this is actually the case or not. Might help anyone in future if it is correct.

  14. Exactly what I thought, can anyone confirm this?

  15. Aparantly the bus has been written off now as a cat B because of no chassis plates. Anyone know exactly why this would be? Has the owner any or no chance of buying it back?

    That's a real shame!

Also ridiculous of the insurance company.
