If it isn’t petrol, does it smell like engine oil or gear oil? You say the oil in the engine is OK, when did you last check the gearbox oil level?

For what it’s worth I think the engine has been leaking for many months and probably years and the accumulated crud has simply reached saturation point but it would be worth cleaning all the filth off the engine so you can actually see it; that oil could be coming from anywhere – except the new starter motor. Low cylinder pressure has nothing to do with an oil leak but it is an indication of a tired engine crying out for an overhaul or at least a bit of TLC.

  2. I'd agree. I'd still put money on a crank oil seal that's slowly been wearing over the years and you've only just noticed the result.

  4. The oil didn't come from the engine then.?

  5. UPDATE

went into the garage today and over the weekend even more oil has come out (bigger puddle) I haven’t cranked it over at all in 7 weeks now and this has definitely happened over the weekend and the puddle wasn’t there before - a mystery? !!!

  6. Does it smell of petrol?

  7. No, I don’t think so

Check the dipstick .. if its petrol getting into the oil and doing it slowly, (havent run the engine to mix it up) the oil can float on a layer of petrol and so what comes out from gaps at the top of things will be mostly oil while there is a petrol layer at the bottom.
Dipstick will be reading very high.

Things like the crank seal are above the standing level of the oil, so if it is leaking heavily from there, the petrol is raising the oil level .. or you have a secret oil cooler high up that is draining back and putting another litre back in to the sump on standing. .

I wouldnt run the engine at all until you are 100% sure this is not a fuel leak.
