Van keeps losing it's tuning

  1. Stalling issues and having to keep the pedal down to stop it stalling are often down to air leaks on the manifold boots or the carb base gasket, even the manifold base gaskets.

  2. Get some knowledgable dude at van west to have a gander.,I'm sure you said you were going!

  3. A lot of pointers - thank you. I admit I don't quite follow all of it so I'll be studying my Haynes
and John Muir How to keep your Volkswagen Alive manuals tonight. I'll will also copy them off and give them to my garage (minus the criticisms) and see the response.

  4. Zed you sound impressive. Where are you in Cambs? I suspect a long way from Gloucester. If my garage doesn't manage to sort it then I'm getting in the mind of putting Violetta on the back of something and shipping her over to you.

  5. I am on the Saturday - and I'm hoping the van will be fixed by then! Was expecting just to be revelling in the joy of owning it. I'm happy to let anyone look at it but it's just finding someone......... and sorting out the wannabe experts from the actual ones. My bullMarmite detector hasn't developed enough in this area yet.

That's very kind, but I'm nothing special! Get a local recommendation and save your time and trouble. I did see you were a long way off or I'd have come for a look.

Air leaks as earlylatebay says are the common cause, or if not a lean idle mixture. Next time it won't tickover right squirt some carb cleaner/brake cleaner/wd40 (messy) at the base of the carb an see if the engine note changes. If it does you have a leak commonlt caused by previous over-tightening of the carb/manifold join bending something, so unless the nuts are actually loose, tightening further will just make things worse in the long run. If no difference when you sqirt your chosen stuff, spray the manifold boots next. Then the manifold/head join.
Check you haynes for the mixture screw and idle speed screw location. When it's being naughty, stick you finger over them and see if Woody's right/that helps. You can narrow this down yourself for free hopefully.
