I saw the below video on youtube re upgrading 7 inch lights

Has anyone any views on its suitability to upgrade the lights on my 73 baywindow currently with original lights but very poor lighting

Very clear video , the presenter seems to grow a third arm at 5.02 to help hold the lens in place

  2. As a first step buy a pair of Bosch headlights with H4 halogen bulbs in. Second step is to clean all the connectors to the headlights. In good shape, the headlights on a Bay should work pretty well.

Another video. I think maybe giving these a call would provide a quick solution to my problem

I think i need the whols assembly including the "bucket" but i understand i may need to adapt the hole the lights fit into on the van by adding a few tabs to fasten the bucket to ?

  5. Simply changing the tungstens to Halogens make a tremendous difference. Source, for example : Just Kampers part No. J10654. If your reflectors are a little tired then changing the complete units as said by Snotty makes sense.

  7. As Snotty says Halogen bulbs are a must, then ensure all the connectors are clean so you're not losing the electricity en route from the battery to the lights. The biggest voltage loss for me was the switch on the dash. If you unscrew this from the dash and let it dangle down you can trace the two headlight wires. Pull these off and connect together directly. If you have instantly brighter lights you know where the problem lies. Lots of folks fit relays to overcome poor connections, when all that's needed is a new switch.

  8. I just checked all the connections were sound and that was it. Been using them for a few years now without any problems. I believe there is an even higher rated lamp available which would very definately need relay switching and a seperate uprated cable to feed them.

  10. I'd bite the bullet and buy some new units (or second-hand - Mk 1 Golf lights are reputed to fit). Halogen bulbs are a must.

Snotty speaks the truth here i am hoping to upgrade mine tbh -- new headlights costa lotta and halogen bulbs - my van has early h/l's .

  12. I did what snotty suggests above - Mk1 Golf headlights drop straight in and then you can use modern H4 bulbs.

Made a massive difference over the old tungsten bulb set-up.

thanks for all the advise ,
however things are still somewhat unclear , i appreciate i need to upgrade the halogen bulbs - that's the least i should do , however advise to put in new headlights is common , but what exactly do i need? ,
do i need the rear buckets , new wiring harness/adapter chrome trim , brackets and fixings, do i need to adapt my current hole in the metal where the lights fit ---so many unknowns by me

i know i am asking for the tread through the needle ,but i want to know exactly what i need to do to upgrade

  14. Just buy the appropriate light units, with removable H4s. To fit, you just remove the chrome trims, undo a few screws, unplug the wiring connector from the rear, then just plug & screw the new ones in. Easy job.

I don't think they're quite listening to you Sproggy.
You have the 3 screw rims so the light all comes to pieces and the whole lot is attached to the rims? Later ones are different and the golf swap is easy. Not easy for you unless the front panel has been replaced as the bowls have fixings for both types of lights.
If they don't, new reflectors are the way to go and make a huge difference along with the H4 bulbs.
I've yet to come across a bus with the old type bulbs in them - everyone has gone to H4 by now I'd have thought? Easy to see the difference - old ones are spherical, H4 are tubular.
Removing the extra bit won't make any difference, though with H4 bulbs you can if you want.
