sorry to anyone who thought you'd find an in depth "how to" complete with pics and parts list... However, for anyone considering this install, the news is "leave an inch gap around the heater" according to the guy that designs them...ie mount the unit in a box with said gap all round. I'd appreciate input or suggestions from anyone who's either done this, successfully or otherwise, or is considering the idea...bit of a brainstorm, as it were Are we allowed to say "Brainstorm" these days? Someone told me it could be construed as offensive....the correct terminology is "Mind map"....I told them to p*ss up a rope, as one does
No idea? Propex do a bespoke underfloor unit, which looks like a nice bit of kit, but I've got an old compact which I'd like to use and new ones are £££££££s
Although not 100% tested, and too some might be a fair bit of work and cutting, it can also be mounted under the front seat in the dead space. I've mocked up piping air into the front and back by way of a Y piece and closable outlet vent into the rear.
I like that. i used to have mine actually in the walkthrough. great position for driving but a pain if you like the walkthrough. this is just dead space!
thanks Keith...missed that! ideas been kicking around for years...surprised noone's already done a bespoke kit already tbh
Hey Kruger...I pulled my compact apart to see if I could fit the burner & fittings where you have...blank off the louvres, bit of ducting, and use the 'space' as the box...easily done. Put it back in it's casing for the time being, while I investigate more options thinking to use the passenger side 'cos the fridge is behind driver's bulkhead, along with master cyl (and possibly another master cyl for a clutch.....in my dreams)
What a great idea ! Looks a win win situation, in that you get heating to cab, heat in back directed towards seats and space back under R&R bed.........oops - does that make it a win win win situation !
I've carpeted out the space under my R&R bed to turn it into a storage locker so i didn't want to have a big oily diesel burner in it really. Under the seats makes the best option for me deffo.....i'll tackle this at the weekend i think
just been looking at your pic again Kruger...looks like you cut and welded the bulkhead base to make a flat section for the propex.... have you done the other side aswell? if so, what for?
I cut both bulkheads out to allow fitting swivel seat bases, the lower part where I've made a hole for the outlet is just a flat plate welded on, to allow fitting the plastic outlet vent onto a flat surface rather than the contoured bit, (hopefully that makes sense) Edit... just realised what I think you might mean, On my top pic where the drill is pointing - I've also welded a plate that I drilled a hole in to make it easier to fit a plastic outlet, rather than trying to fit it into the large oval hole that sits there, the cardboard/foil pipe will run under the propex to pipe the heat to this front vent.
genius use of space, i thought i'd done well fitting mine in the westy wheel cupboard to save space but that's wicked. http://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w468/rickyrooo1/IMG_1592.jpg
Thats us! Bus is there at the moment, half way through and being over seen by Ivan McCutcheon, ie former Volksworld editor, and being fitted by Andy. Both been very helpful so far, I'll let you all know how it is when we get it back soon.
Inav theMcwhat cutch. He a gas expert then? Volksworld - lol! Im sure it will be a pucker job and cant wait to see it!
was a bit wary of cutting an outlet hole where you've put the plate in, due to the number of spot welds....not so much the strength issue, more a question of meltin' me hole saw... still like the idea of an underfloor box, but no plans yet....maybe tucked under the passenger floorwell opposite the pedals plenty of options....
Most of the metal is still behind it, just I put a bigger panel over the whole lot to make it look flush, from memory theres a strengthener where the seat belt points are but I've not gone close to that.
I'll have another look at that then, as i like the idea of all the available heat, heating the bus, including the radiant heat from the unit itself....would keep your arse warm in winter
