unattached thick wire off the alternator?

  1. Hi guys
The perils of buying a half finished project....

My battery is not charging and there is a thick black wire coming off the alternator that is unattached. Where should it go?
    (T2 TYPE 4)

Also do some type 4 recond Alternators have a built in regulator or should that be pluged in too?!!!

  2. The wire coming from the B+ connector on the alternator should go to the battery, the wire from the D+ should go to the alt light in the dash.

Both are needed to complete the circuit and charge the battery.

Like MF says, the thick wire from the alt goes to the + on the battery. Does it have a connector or is it just 'snapped'.

As said above should go to the alternator but try tracing the wire to see where it goes if it is for the alternator the other end will go to the starter motor
If it goes to the battery don't worry still the same

  5. Don't run the engine without the alternator being connected, you might blow the diodes!!!

The cable should indeed go to the post on the starter, then another thick cable to the battery. This, I believe is a rather weak point in the system as the connections at the starter can become corroded. I removed my alternator to starter cable and took a new thick cable straight to the battery.

Then underneath the vehicle, attached the thick wire from the battery directly and firmly to the "vehicle load" cable.
