Uh oh, think my gearbix is bye bye

  1. Been having problems the last few months and think its finally done. 1st gear has always been a nightmare to get into and reverse grind on way into gear. 2nd gear sometimes gets stiff ti get into. i can find the gears no problem, its getting them in that was always the hassle. Tonight though, same problem with reverse, 1st gear when i shove it in, it sticks in gear and its near impossoble to get out with engine on. reverse sometimes sticks in reverse. 2nd gear us none existent, when i try to go in from any other gear with the van moving, it grinds and wont go in. When i put it in from standing, it slips in no problem, i lift the clutch and nothing happens till it stalls.

Any help? If it means engine out for the next week id rather replace any parts that i can whilst its out so a list of internal linkages, a decent clutch and anything else that will need doing would be handy.

    Heeeelllpppp :(:(

  2. Try adjusting your clutch first.

  3. Im handy with tools as an electrician, but not mechanically minded. Any guides or info would be greatly appreciated. If iv got instructions theres not much i wont tackle but i hate doing things blind. :)

  4. your clutch cable will stretch somewhat being a cable, to adjust is simples (most of the time)
find the "wing nut" coming through your "Bowden tube" and turn clockwise. if your baffled
just follow the cable back to the engine bay and the rest will be self explanitory

  5. I would eliminate clutch to before getting into changing the box. If it bites near the bottom. Ie pedal is close to floor then that's favourite. I bought a manual when I first got my bus but didn't have the benefit of being able to ask other bus owners. I still refer to it now. A lit of it will be jibberish but you can get the basics and work from there.

  6. Cheers mate

  7. As above have a go with the cable.

  9. If the cable is on its way out it wouldn't help.

If you need more adjustment you can add a pile of washers.

  11. Right, uodate time. Adjusted the clutch. bite was right at the bottom, now its about 3/4 of the way up the travel. Reverse and 1st now go in perfect so thats fine. 2nd i can feel it go into gear when stand still and it stalls when i lift my foot off pedal. When driving it still makes a grinding noise and wont go in.

Also, will the bite being near the top be detrimental, i dont want the clutch to be slightly disengaged when driving for obvious reasons. Thinking of loosening back off a touch.

  12. Sadly sounds like a new box to me :(

There should be a bit (about an inch I think?) of free movement at the top of the clutch pedal movement so it sounds like that's now about right.
    Where are you?

  14. Ill double check when i get home. Think it may need to be down a touch. Hamilton near glasgow

Too far for me to come and look then!
Someone will confirm how much free movement you should have. @snotty @zed?

  16. Still doesnt solve no swcond gear though as iv went from one end to the other. As i said, when i put it into second when stationary, it goes in for definite. When i lift the clutch it stalls. But theres no biting point ie movement. Just remembwred actually. It holds the van still, as if its on the biting point but i cant get movement

    Engine out...

  18. Thats what im thinking. Dont want to do it without having a few parts and an idea though

I wonder if this is something like the little ball on the end of the hockeystick shaped end of the gearchange rod in the nose of the gearbox. If that wears out it makes it hard to get into gears, or get out of gears.

The plastic version is under £4, and its quite easy to fit.. only you have to take the engine out to drop the gearbox back to get the nosecone off the gearbox.

On the left, the old version with a big hole. On the right the new one with a little hole that fits the shaft properly

The end of the gear change transfer lever which slides up and down in the nosecone of the gearbox with damage where the ball was letting the shaft hit the lever. I filed off the burring to get the new ball in to the hole.

  20. This could still be a frayed cable, knackered conduit etc. easy to eliminate involves lying on the floor and getting dirty hands to find out.
