Tyre profile and spare wheel question

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by the crumpets, Jan 12, 2014.

  1. At the moment the van has 185-14-80's at the rear and 185-14-70's on the front. in the ideal world they would be the same all round and later when I need to (and can afford it) change them I will get them the same.

My question is two fold really:

    1. Is this legal for the MOT to have differing profiles?
    2. What should be the profile for the spare wheel be in this instance? My thought is that i should have an 80 on the rear, if I put a 70 on the rear (as a spare) it would over work the gearing/differential at the rear having two differing profiles fitted whereas the front wheels are free wheeling. Would this work?

  2. Question 1, front to back yes, left to right no.

You would only use the spare to get you out of trouble until you fix the flat so it makes no odds.

Drive slow though as it would handle like a sack of Marmite. Don't try using it long term, like an emergency spare like you see some people do, you'll accelerate the wear on both tyres on that axle
    :)

  3. I have just ordered for the front wheels some 185/80/14 - 102/100T on the web site it said they were van rated.

When I phoned up to confirm delivery and fitting time the gentleman on the end of the phone said that they were not suitable for a camper van. Is he correct or is he just trying to get me to buy the more expensive tyres?
