Tyre help

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by chrisgooner, Jan 29, 2013.

  1. Hi guys I'm in need of some tyre assistance. My bus came with a set of empi 5's which have 185/65/15 on them. It's getting near the time to change them and as the van is my daily and I do a fair bit of motorway driving I would like bigger tyres for better cruising.
My van has been lowered by one spline on the rear and adjusters on the front.
PCD and offset is all a bit goobledegook to me all i need to know is do any of you have a similar suspension and wheel set up as me with bigger tyres or will bigger tyres fit and if so what size?

    Cheers for any help

We have 195/65 x 15's on Major & he rolls along just fine with little speedo error (cant remember for the moment, think its ~2 to 3 mph error at 50mph) but he is a 2.o FI

Can't help with the size, but get some with 100+ load rating

195 70 15 is as near as dammit to the original 185 14 original spec.

  5. Mark is major lowered?
Cheers for that Rick but being moderately lowered not sure if they would go in without and rubbage?

1 spline down, standard dia tyres, no problemo. Unless you raked the front down, then who knows?

"Nose down stance" as the early boys call it...

  12. i have 195 70 15 and am down one spline with tons of clearance ....weill 15mm

  14. i think i went for 195 65 15 on the front so speedo reads slightly out bur gear ratios and the like are correct

  16. After checking the distance between my 185/65's and the inside of my rear arches I've discovered a very slim gap less than a finger width really, so I'm guessing the offset of my empi's is quite severe. I'm thinking the way forward in my quest to obtain better cruising speed is to change my wheels. I'm considering buying some steelies or some different alloys that have a better offset.

I'm not too clued up on offset and PCD am I right in thinking that the higher the offset number the further out the wheels go towards the arches?
    Sorry for my dimness :)

pcd will be 112mm on a late bay, pitch circle diameter of the wheel studs from the centre (5 x 112), the 5 is number of studs

  18. Cheers Mark what about the offset?

that confuses me too mate! Somewhere on the wheel it will have a number - eg ET12 (offset = 12mm) but how it works beats me! Somewhere on here is a diagram showing how the offset is calculated! I know our Gasburners are ET12's the rest..
