Hi Just bought a new oil cooler for my type 4 GD engine after a rebuild. The cooler will not fit due to the oil filter mounting stud and the holes don't line up as per the pictures. I bought it from VW heritage part number 021117021/b. My question is are there different coolers for Different engine numbers VW heritage only list one I know this engine is US spec And I don't have the old cooler to compare. Any ideas Cheers
I also had trouble. These coolers are bigger in all directions, you won't get the clamp/bracket on the other end either. It did go on though, with a 12 or 11mm nut on the filter mount and some jiggling IIRC. Hopefully you'll find as I did that once you stop it fouling other things it'll go onto the studs OK and you'll wonder what the problem was.
I took a more brutal approach to make mine fit, cut the corner off so it sits against the housing better. It was still a fiddle to get it on though. So I'd agree with @zedders these are not OEM size !
I bought one from Just Kampers and also had fitting problems (suspect they are made from the same supplier)... No allowance for mounting/support bracket to be fitted around end of cooler. End of cooler hits engine oil filter mounting nut which causes cooler to not align with stud on engine so cant be pushed back against engine block. Stud length on engine is 38mm, original VW cooler boss is 30mm high, on new cooler it is 34mm so nut and washers cannot be fitted. As there was no alternative I complained, got a partial refund then very carefully modified mine with a file using the old one for reference to get around all the above issues.
Hi Thanks for the replies,I spoke to heritage this morning and they said there is only one cooler for the type 4 engine and they are not aware of any problems fitting them. Well I think I'll just have to make it fit like everyone else. Thanks guys
I didn't have to chop mine, but didn't fit the bracket. It looked impossible. I may have temporarily removed one or more of it's studs, possibly the short one.
Using a bolt may help you. I couldn't get around this nut on the mounting. So I took drastic action! It works fine
I had the same fitment issues and replacing the stud on the oil mount with a bolt helped and I still had to slap it on but once on it fit fine. The end bracket won't fit the a/m filter as you all mentioned so what did yo do? Make a bracket or leave it off?
Original on the left, Bruck replacement on the right. The bolt holes lined up fine but there was some excess material (shaded red) to remove so the bracket fitted.
I know it started as an old thread but, you can bend the surrounding metal a bit you can just about get a bracket on... Sent from my SM-T580 using Tapatalk
I wouldn't worry too much, dont remember anything actually sealing against that foam.. Sent from my SM-T580 using Tapatalk
.I ran my bus for years without a bracket decades ago in my student days when I couldn't be bothered to put fiddly parts back on, like the thermostat. Those carefree, devil-may-care days are long gone. I think it's purpose is to secure it against vibration, which is important. That bracket can be a pain to fit even on original oil coolers. Good to know aftermarket oil coolers have problems with fit. I'm just shocked. Really. I was considering a new one, but my original doesn't seem to leak. I will have it ultrasonically cleaned and pressure tested and just run it.
