Type 4 Heat exchangers with Porsche cooling

  1. Hi all, I have a Porsche cooling fan and shroud on my type 4 engined 77 Westfalia. Having had it for a number of years we only used it in summer months. We now want to use it for longer periods in the year. Problem is, it uses j tubes and I have no heating as the engine does not have the normal front fan shroud any more. I wondered if I could modify the original heat exchangers (which I still have) to work with the Porsche cooling system? I have custom made the tinware for the Porsche cooling stuff see pic.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

    Install a propex?

  3. I know, but I’m trying to see if I can meet the challenge by engineering a way to do it.

  4. If you talk to jake raby he’ll just say that the heat exchangers are too restrictive so leave them off and just get a separate heater.

that said, for the uk I wouldn’t want to be without heat exchangers and although my bus also has an eberspacher I wouldn’t want to have to have that running the whole time on a long winter journey.

Orratech do a setup with Porsche style cooling on a type 4 that does retain the heat exchangers.

  5. ^ the orange pipes take air flow from the fan and push it through the heat exchangers.

  6. That is interesting. So I would have to tap into the fibre glass fan shroud and direct it down to the heat exchangers? Can’t be difficult right?. Thanks Rob.

  7. Sorry, and then seal up the open ends of the heat exchangers that woul normally go into the original type 4 front fan housing!

  8. Yes. I think orratech make their own heat exchangers but in principle yes if you blocked off where the og heat exchangers would have been connected to the original shroud and just feed in air from the new fan into the top of the heat exchanger ie where the auxiliary blower would have been connected, should work?

  9. Thanks Rob. Going to try it and will come back with outcome.

Or leave that beautiful engine alone and put in a propex which work great on the move and stationary
My heat exchangers and heat system works as it should but let’s face it - you will never get the experience you really hope for with that heating system and maybe a lot of effort for not such a fantastic return. Put the same amount of hours in to installing a propex
