    I don't think 220mm exist?
    210 for 1700/1800
    228 for 2L

The clutch surface on the flywheel is the bit to measure.
215, I think way back I had one

Second pic is the clutch plate itself which is 215mm.

Unless the walls down to the clutch surface taper towards the centre, I would have thought that the measurement at the top would be the same as at the bottom...or am I missing something?

No, I think you're right, my bad (again!). I should gt on with destroying my boat interior but it's like an oven in there today so I keep stopping to post confusing half baked things on TLB.

Random question time. As long as the starter ring around the edge is correct diameter, does the clutch and corresponding clutch surface on the flywheel have to match what I have today?

All the starter rings are the same dia, but the 228mm flywheel is deeper and requires a different starter/bell housing. Those pesky bell housings are interchangeable so... You have a 6 rib box and a 215mm flywheel. Do you know which starter you have? If it's a short one I believe that would indicate a less deep bell housing that would not be suitable for a 228 flywheel, but... I think a deep starter/bell housing are ok with a 215 flywheel.
To avoid getting into a hair tearing mismatch, I would check which type of bell housing and starter you have as well.

Why are you looking to replace the flywheel?

The Porsche 914 used a 215mm clutch but AFAIK buses only had 210mm or 228mm, so maybe you have a Porsche flywheel/clutch. What's wrong with it?

You'll be lucky to find a good used Type 4 flywheel and even luckier to find a 215, but you never know what might turn up.
If you have the later bell-housing and starter motor a wasserboxer flywheel will fit and you could use a 228mm clutch.

How do I know what bell housing and starter I have?

Either pull the starter or get the part number.

Starter is on the floor. From the starter, what do I measure?

I have a late starter in the garage and I'll measure it tomorrow. Unless someone comes up with a dimension in the meantime.

All I know about 215 t4 flywheels is they are sought after and rare. When I looked for a replacement for mine, which was a WO code 1700 20 years ago, among others I called The Engine Shop and Jim there asked what was wrong with mine. I told him it had big deep cracks right across the clutch surface. He wanted to buy it from me anyway and said he's weld up the cracks, machine the clutch surface and rebalance it. That's how hard they were to find 20 years ago, so now?
