type 4 engine started to run a bit rich?

  1. Hi all,

Start my bus up every few weeks but haven't taken it for a long run for a month or so.

Last time I started it I took it round the block and it seemed to be running a bit rich for a mile or so.

i did a service last week and cleaned up the plugs which were proper sooted up.

Started it earlier today with the air filters off to make sure the chokes were coming off, which they are.

When you rev it, there's a bit of black smoke out of the exhaust, although it is revving ok when the chokes come off.

Fitted brand new Brosol Solex twin carbs last year which were professionally tuned and set up, got electronic ignition fitted.

    Timing spot on.

Could there be something causing the rich running, or do you reckon it's just down to lack of use over the winter months and the fact that it has been started and run up in the garage without being driven for a few miles?

    Thanks.

That sounds ok to me.

  3. Although the chokes are opening it may be worth taking it for an extra run. If the filament in the opening mechanism is dodgy it can warm up up initially then close again. It's happened to me and was hard to spot.

However, vinny may be right and all is well. It takes a good few miles to properly warm up in winter. If all you do is turn it over now and then the plugs are bound to be sooty.

  4. thanks guys - that's put my mind at rest!

Will take it for a good run.

  5. A good 5 miles plus in town on a crisp day, should n't think there'd be much chance of icing in the carbs themselves so far this year.
