I have a 1700 type 4 engine in my 1973 late bay, question is, the engine code is CA it's the engine it left the factory with so I know it's not a aftermarket rebuilt version, however you never seem to see much reference to CA coded engines, anyone know why?
There aren't many around as it's the first bus engine and most would have been replaced or rebuilt by now. The 1700 was apparently more prone to overheating, I think the CA was a one year only, quickly replaced by the CB which was quickly replaced by an 1800.
I thought that might be the case, it being the first type 4 engine, it's only got 62000 on it and it's been very well looked after, and I intend on taking very good care of it! Thanks for the info
According to this: http://vag-codes.info/files/engines/vw-engines.pdf CA and CB code engines were used ’71 to ’73 – possibly for different markets? That would explain why you have a CA engine in a ’73 Bay.
