Lots of head scratching going on in the garage at the moment ! As my mechanic has retired and moved to Scotland, I have decided to do some of the basic stuff myself....in the words of Clarkson " how hard can it be ? "
I have watched all the videos about setting valve clearances, but realised that when I set up timing mark so that rotor arm is at 5 0'clock and pointing to groove on distributer body, I have no. 4 plug lead, not no. 1 ! the distributor appears to be a quarter turn out.
The vacuum part points towards the oil breather box ( middle of engine ) and the engine runs ( ran ) fine.
I have set the valves by just moving the engine around anti clockwise at 180 degree intervals and wandered about under the bus adjusting any valves that were in closed position.
What, if anything am I doing wrong.

Thanks for looking guys.....I'm sure comments will follow.

  2. It does not matter which way your distributor is, just find no. 1 TDC and adjust no.1 valves, then turn crank pulley 180 back(anticlockwise) which brings you to no.2 TDC and adjust no.2 valves, etc....
