Type 4 differences between codes AN & AP

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Carl Smith, Aug 5, 2021.

  1. Hi

What are the differences between a 1800 AN coded engine and a 1800 AP coded engine? How to they get the extra BHP on the Porsche 914 AN coded engine. Is it from the FI, carbs or exhaust?

    Many thanks.

  2. I'm sure someone that knows will come along but I'd guess cam, compression ratio from different pistons less restrictive exhaust and a bit more carb

I know the W code 1700 got more power than the bus equivalent, by using dome topped pistons, and FI. So probably something like that.

  5. .. Jetronic FI prob helps too

FI would certainly help but they claim the same BHP with carbs. I don’t know much about the small engines but I think the only differences are the cam and pistons. There are more differences between the 2.0l 914 and 2.0l bus engines.

    Bigger valves too.

    Buses want torque though :)

  9. I would have thought it’s in the Cam timing. Bus needs a different approach to a rather lighter car. Ones a torque job and ones a power job

  10. its high comp pistons and cam

  11. So would you not recommend putting a AN code 914/412 engine in a bus?

The bus version also has sodium filled valves to try and dump extra heat.

Yes higher octane to cover higher compression and more power.. Kill it in a bus I expect unless you fit the dished pistons and turn it back into a lower powered engine.

Thats from a set of scans that @Valveandy did of some manuals I own. I lent them to him, he scanned them and returned the favour by giving me a copy of the scans.

No, the torque will be virtually identical but the AN will make it at higher revs and hence make more BHP, but for a bus you want the torque at low revs.

If you want more torque, make the engine bigger, there is no replacement for displacement.

according to the figures above the an and at have max torque at the same engine rpm with the an being slightly higher
