Having stripped two motors down I have 2 sets of heads. . One square port one oval... I have heat exchangers for the square but one is shot.. The other well preserved by the oil leak! I've already cleaned up the square port and they look ok but before overhauling them with new valves and as I need an exchanger anyway and they often come in pairs.. Which is best square or oval? And if I buy some oval port exchangers to cover both bases... assuming the cutting off the stub mod works.. how much porting is there to do to match the square outlet?... Or do I just get a replacement square port right exchanger..? Opinions please...
I'll stick with those heads then.. good as they're already clean... now to sort whether adapting oval exchangers is viable or worth the bother... doubt it somehow... anyone got a right side square port exchanger in good going cheap?
Yes you can adapt the oval port exchangers to fit the sqaure port heads. I did on on my bay when it was still aircooled years ago. Literally just cut the oval bit off very carefully level with the stub where the studs go and finish off nicely with a file. Put a good straight edge across the two ports to make sure they are dead square to each other. Mine ran round like this for 3 or 4 years before i re engined it.
Blimey, I remember you. I painted a bus mango green after seeing yours. I think you put a golf engine in it?
Hello Steve yeah I finally signed up. You mean this bus? Splitty has long gone now. Had a car run into it causing a lot of damage. Insurance paid out and I rebuilt it then took a beautiful aussie import squareback in part ex for it. I still have my bay after 16 years. Its now got a 110 tdi from a passat with 5 speed flipped box, cruise control etc... I don't think I'll part with it anytime soon. Best 500 quid I ever spent are you still rebuilding buses?
That's the one. No I'm sort of retired, chucked nearly all my possessions and right now I'm driving about in a late bay camper looking for a nice narrowboat. Funny old life
