Hello all, Finally got the engine out and started the strip down ready for the rebuild. It is a 1600 TP. When it came to removing the engine I Saw that there was no thermostat or rod but a bracket for the thermostat then When I stripped all of the tin ware away I then found that there were no thermostat flaps on the bottom of the fan shroud. I know they were originally fitted and it is best practice to get them fitted but what damage could have been done to the engine, there has been none fitted for the past five years that we have had the van and it seems to be ok, is it ok not to fit them in this country if that makes a difference
I did have em on my old engine but now don't have em on my newer engine coz i fitted a smaller dog house fan shroud, im just getting my popcorn out now coz this is always a good un
No. They're totally superfluous...VW just put them on for fancy If everything is as it should be in the tinware and seals department, then the thermostat will help with warm up...'specially in UK winter. Fortunately, as most of us seem quite happy to drive around in fuel-guzzling dinosaurs without concern for the future plight our grandchildren, by the time you've managed to source the bit of tinware that holds the thermostat on, it will be a good five degrees hotter all year round...
Fine , seeing as no one has, so far leastwise let me be the 1st to say in reply to your enquiry >the design dudes did not spend all that time/money testing same system and deciding it was/is a fab idea to fit for anyone to overrule same decision<or something like that ,iyswim?P.S. I got 8 tins here and some crisps ,could be a longgggg night dude !
I suspect Woody has same fan housing as I do and flaps can't be fitted or at least there are no fixing holes pre-drilled.
Yeah this ^^ I don't think they're made to be fitted with them, we all know the reasons for having them but i really don't think they make much of a difference but i guess i'll find out in time
I've only two dozen left to shift....couldn't fit any more in the trailer when I weighed them in Good bit of business mind...with the proceeds I managed to persuade Frank (of Franks VW spares) to allow me to stand near a Nos So42 ice cube tray....best £200 I've spent in a long time...
I've bought the bits to replace them on mine, don't have a working thermostat yet but will probably fit as the spring holds them open anyway. Gives me the option later...
