Type 1 Engine mounts

  1. Hi,

Did the brakes today and spotted my engine mounts might have seen better days. Am I correct? It is difficult to see but there are a few cracks in the rubber.[IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

  2. @SkutterBob i seem to think they have some steel re-enforcing in the bushing but I’d say they probably still need swapping. Replacements don’t seem to last all that long as mine have done zero miles but also perished, can’t remember how long they’ve been on though

  3. Can I swap these out without having to drop the engine?

Support the rear of the engine, push up a tiny bit with the jack with a wooden pad, as though you were going to remove the engine.
Then you can unbolt the rear support bar from the engine mounts . Then you can remove the rear support bar from the engine by undoing the three bolts at the back of the engine.
Then your engine mounts are free.

It doesnt need a lot of lift from the jack on a Late Bay which has the square section support bar: the back of the engine will drop a bit if it is not supported, as it will hang from the gearbox support instead.

If its a prototype without gearbox supports and it has the wide "moustache" bar, then you definitely need a support under the rear of the engine or it will all drop down a fair way possibly doing something nasty at the front of the gearbox, or try to pull the CV joints apart as it hangs there.

  6. Cheers - one of the easiest jobs on a T2. Took about 5 mins per side. Took me longer to find the torque settings.

Did as you said, supported the moustache bar with a jack and wooden block and took out the bolts. Raising the jack a bit helped line everything up. Did one side at a time.
