Well, the ferry is booked, the toll tag ordered and I just need to book the campsite then come Christmas we are off to Carcassonne!!! Woo hoo I hear you say but this is not necessarily true I have not travelled by car in France before and as Dave has pointed out it's a blo*dy long way to Carcassonne from Dieppe so we certainly won't make it there in one day. I'm fine with this but am really struggling to work out a way to find a campsite for that first night. We want to aim to do about 300 miles but looking at the route planners they don't show any real towns near this point that I can then work out where to find a campsite (might need to book in advance). Plus, we've made it more difficult for ourselves by only being able to use open all year round sites. Does anyone have any experience of finding sites easily or can suggest any books that might help? I'm mainly worried about there not being as many open as usual so my choices will be limited :- Cheers
Its France more sites than you can throw a stick at. If you going on PĂ©age roads yes you will miss the towns. We avoid them as you pay more for get nowhere (unless you floor it but keep to the limits) and see france. If your not worried about having a proper site but happy with a waste a tap site you'll see plenty signs.
Thanks Tuesday! I know France is rammed with sites but you'd be amazed how many aren't open in December Plus, we'll mainly be on the big roads as we want to get there quickly for xmas but may take our time coming back and visit Versaille, epic ^-^ I reckon you're on a winner with the basic stop over.
If you just want a stop over you could buy one of these... 'Le guide national des aires' - stopovers, basic facilities, cheap or free or try this site http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/county.asp?region=France http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/results.asp?county=Languedoc%20Roussillon
This is what you need: https://www.vicarious-shop.com/All-the-Aires-France-3rd-edition-all-the-France-Aires.html The 3rd Edition is all sold out, but the 4th edition is coming in November so you should be able to get one before you go. It was recommended to us by a friend and from what I've seen of it, it's pretty good.
We went to France during August.....and it was brilliant. Mostly stayed in the camping municipal sites which were never full and easy to book into on arrival. There are hundreds of them and each town council is required to run a site ...google camping municipal and see what's close to your route. Have a stella trip Cheers Jason
