Twin carbs

If you don't boot it, same performance. You made it sound like fitting twin carbs will just suck more petrol out of your tank full stop which isn't the case.

I drove up to Scotland with a single carb and 1600cc's. I drove back with 1955 cc's and twin carbs. On the way up I got 28mpg. On the way back I got 28mpg. Saying that twin carbs or a bigger engine is the way to more petrol use full stop, isn't true.

I think the result of the thread is that fuel economy is best obtained by careful driving, and given the cost of new carbs either single or not it would be
very hard to recoup it by saving at most it seems 4-5 miles per gallon as to performance I really don't mind, and those people behind will just have to wait.
So I'm going to stick with the stock set up thanks for all your comments.

  3. I'm fairly sure that'll be the fuel tank sender. I can't see how the fuel gauge voltage regulator could cause that problem.
If yours is a pre-73 bus, it probably won't have a voltage regulator (the fuel gauge is a balanced coil, and is self-regulating).

    Good info here:

  4. Well, booting it aside, I'm freeing up a t4 1700 CB engine from my 412 when I fit a t4 1800 in the 412, is it worth the effort to fit the t4 1700 to the bus. Some mention drivability, others mention top speed in third, and hill climbing ability, but in the real World, in convoy with other bays to the South of France, some of you are saying there will be no change in mpg?

Anyone any link to a video with a stock t1 1600 vs a stock t4 1700? Perhaps an article comparing the two written in the dim and distant past? I don't mean drag racing, just the driving experience. Also, I'm fitting a tow bar to the bay, I'm assuming the t4 1700 will tow better as well?

I had a 1700 westy for 10 years. I used to tow 2 laser sailing dinghies on a tandem trailer. It left my 2L mates on the motorway hills, though they had more grunt at lower speeds. I've also had a 1600 and though it was ok, I wouldn't have hitched anything on the back and 45 in 3rd was it. Going into 4th at 45mph is pretty hopeless. Getting to 55mph in 3rd makes all the difference and 45-55 in 3rd with a 1700 is where the best acceleration happens.
Well worth it if you have a turnkey engine.
