turnkey type 1 engine that will fit straight into my 1700 late bay

  1. Hi all,

With all the issues I am having with my type 4 engine, and the apparent lack (cost!) of engines think I am going to go down the route of fitting a type 1,

I have put a post in mech & tech to ask exactly what I need to fit, but I am also after such an engine - as all my parts are currently type 4, I think I will need a turnkey type 1 engine with all the tinware & support bar (or holes for it?).

1641 would be nice (think 1776 will be too expensive) but good strong 1600 should be OK.

  2. Get your T4 rebuilt,,mutch better option.

  3. I was always under the impression (false or true) that the T4 engine is stronger than the T1 and therefore more reliable? No doubt someone will come and either confirm or otherwise, and would have thought by the time you added in the extra bits (tinware etc) that it would have made more sense to have the T4 rebuilt ... at least that is what I planned to do ... ???

  4. Also consider that it you have the original transmission for a type4 engine it will be taller geared than a type one 1600 transmission. Taller gears generally mean you need more power to keep the bus going up inclindes etc, put a 1600 engine (or even a 1641) on a type4 ratio transmission and your bus wil not appreciate hills/inclines.

On the plus side, the type4 ration transmision is worth more than a type1 ratio transmission so you might be better to sell/swap that out too

  5. may people saying that the type 4 engine is stonger than the type 1, but had 4 campers - 2 have hd type 4 engines and I hae had nothing but trouble with them, and the other 2 have had type 1 engines and I have had no trouble from these so just going by my own personal experience.

Talking to a few people who have dealt in campers, I have been ld to believe that the type 4 engines are notorious for cracked heads, loose valve guides and valve issues.

Mine is low on compression on 2 cylinders so could be heads, could be rings - I am being quoted 500ish to rebuild the heads (assuming they are not cracked), probably double that to rebuild the whol engine.

Just seems a lot of money and hassle to me and thought an easier option would be to swap the whole engine - been offered a couple of type 4 engines for 500 & 750 complete, but put off these engines by my experiences.
