Trouble getting 2nd

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Bobreoc, Feb 28, 2013.

  1. I've been having some trouble with getting gears on my bay, (I know it's hard anyway) but fitting and empi shifter today has made a massive difference.
Although it is still a struggle to select 2nd

    Is this common?

Only if the shifter isn't set up right, or the shift rod bushes are worn.
It shouldn't be hard to find gears.

  3. What would you say would be my next step?.... Not sure what to check next

My van had only 3rd and 4th when i got it so drove home in 3rd and 4th thought i bought a lot of problems ,but got out my manuel and took outgear shift and re-seated the plate and now is great after half hours works:) result

  5. Can't help with the empi. Mines stock and can get all gears fine. You may have a prob somewhere else.

Try messing about with the base of your new shifter. When I fitted mine, I put it in second before removing the old one, then fitted the new one with the shifter in the position for second. A few minutes of small adjustments meant I now get every gear easily.

  7. the only time i struggle with 2nd is moving down gears for some reason....

  8. Ok thanks, ill take it back out and re seat the shifter and try and reset it.

  9. Yes I get it down and up though as well

  10. I could be wrong but I seem to remember , putting into second with the selector plate loose then then positioning the plate by pushing it to the right against the stick then to the front of the van, tighten and try again

Your gear shift is about as un-worn out as they get Ken.

If other "things" are worn, getting the shift plate right is going to be hit and miss.

  15. must be normal then Lofty x

  16. I reckon so. I think it is a built in safety measure to ensure you slow right down before going round a corner !

So when it doesn't hit second on the down change, does yours give an audible warning to road users as you approach the corner/junction..i.e the sounds of gears graunching ?
Lola does....I just think it's her subtle way of getting noticed :)

  18. whenever mine does that i'm always reminded of my driving instructor saying "it's a gear box not a juke box, it's not supposed to make a noise" :D :D

  19. Try pressing the clutch down move into neutral then let the clutch back up
Press it down again and move into second gear and let it out as normal

  20. is this the "double declutch" thing my dad tried to teach me before i got it sorted out properly? i would dread having to remember to do it and do it in time, spent weeks coasting round corners :D
