Was the donor car more solid than this one?!

We sweat blood and tears for nostalgia don’t we!

There’s actually a few donor cars involved and I do have a shell in another shed that I bought for the job that’s much much better. The plan was to use a donor shell and cut this one up for wall art but I just couldn’t do it. I got as far as marking the cutting lines out but then decided that I have to rescue as much as possible otherwise it’s a different car. I hear you all shout “triggers broom” and yes I agree but as long as some of it remains I’m a happy old fool!

If your talented and patient enough to do it I suspect all of us can dig what you are doing.

Any normal person reading this however…..!

I’ve added a wanted ad for some period bits and bobs. Please have a look in the darkest depths of your garages, sheds and lofts, dust off the cobwebs, and help me build something very cool!

    Is an '89 cal looker?

If it is I can provide Pollock like paint splashes in each wheel well if that is of any use.

I can also advise on fitting the lifted deck so that EVERYONE at traffic lights can tell you your bootlid isn't shut.

image.jpg Here’s the old glove box door. The engine tin was the same. My kids love it! Anything went back then when nobody worried what other people thought. Happy days!!

No no - I personally wasn't into Beetles - I was Mini man back then.

One of my good friends had a red cal looker in 1990 - he had the paint splashes in the wheel wells and on the engine bulkhead - it ran on black BRM's and had the hardest ride of any car I've ever been in. Might have looked cool, but was slow as an old dog with no handling!

    This is my brothers beetle

IMG_4540.jpeg Bit more done today. Scuttle welded in and flitch repair panel in too. Was going to fit new front quarters but the repro ones are awful quality so best repair what is here, will just take longer (and more filler!)

Yes that’s very cool and amazingly enough IMG_1767.jpeg I’m actually building a harlequin beetle for the missus. We’ve got as far as sourcing a solid Mexican bug and having the interior trimmed. It just waiting for paint and minor prep when the weather gets better!

I’ll start another thread once we get started on it

Thanks Rob. Trying to get it ready for the coming season. Lots more welding to do and then onto the paint prep which I’m guessing will slow me down!

Brilliant thread, good luck with it!

I have distanced memories of RTTS in 1993, six of us went for the week, loved it!

Thanks buddy. Yes the original RTTS days were always good fun until the drive home! We went to RTTS23 in the Westy. Was good but unfortunately nothing like the original, although I’m older now which probably had something to do with it! Would love to take ‘trigger’ there again once finished.

We went in a Toyota Hi-Lux, two in the front, four in the loading bay thingamee, sat on sofa cushions..lord knows how we made it, got a cheap static caravan which we fell lucky with.

Yes some good memories from RTTS, Santa Pod & Avon park too. Was definitely a good time to be alive!
