Its a horrible nasty dirty job and if i had the money id pay someone else to do it everytime This Means this
I done this job on an Escort van and a Saxo and I would rather not have to do it on my Audi TBH, its a right messy uncomfortable job. My bus had to be done by a pro
Bit of an update , local blasters say they will blast underneath for £120 which i dont think is a rip off price at all , he is a bit concerned as its a van on the road , with a tank of petrol , normaly he gets shells to blast ,when i said it needs doing from rear "axle" to the front he said he would give it ago but may need to drain fuel tank. I can take it in the morning so thats what i am gonna do. I recon saving 40 to 50 pounds i would have spent tobuy wire brushes etc , so its costing me effectively 80 to blast it (thats my weired logic) I think i will use the rust buster epoxy ontop of the bare metal sprayed on by me , Would i be right then covering that with waxoyle underseal and the cavities with waxoil also , i havnt got my head around "stonechip"!
Well ive had her sandblasted and a great job has been made of it its like new metal underneath , no problems found , whilst i was there i cheekily asked if he would do the wheels for me which he did , All in all i am pleased , normal cost is £150 but as i had already done to the rear from rear shafts i was charged £120 , once finished he phoned me and asked me to examine the work and see if i wanted anything else doing, he did a few areas i pointed out (plus the wheels) He said he would be happy to the same work on any other van that may need doing , very nice chap. I don't quite understand rules on plugging businesses on here so i wont post his details unless someone advises that i can ive now ordered some rustbuster epoxy mastic to cover it all up again now
sounds like a bargain ..........I spent months wire brushing and striping dirt and under seal from mine..........and there are still a few patches to do yet!! I think you made the right choice
Rustbuster have contacted me and state delivery should be here tomorrow , i have washed the van outside but the inside will have to wait ? I am feeling like absolute crap Bad back bad neck full of cold .its been coming on a few days, dont think i will be spraying tomorrow !!
A update for youre progress I have not been able to coat the van with the epoxy as the instructions state it should be at least 3 degrees to do it , Since the sandblasting the weather has barely been that warm for one single day . Since it was blasted it has been parked on the drive and i have notes a slight coating of rust has set on the wheels , as a result i have put the van on axle stands and examined underneath. i am very pleased to say that thankfully it is still as bright as the day it was blasted. In a effort to protect the metal i have got a couple of tins of red oxide and with brush ans small roller i have covered the metal (never used a roller before and i must say it made the job a doddle) It now looks pretty good underneath but it don't look like many of the other vans that have had a complete strip and rebuild , mainly because all my cables and fittings are still on the vehicle , to be honest i have just painted those as well , my thoughts are they would also be protected , besides it was easier to paint them as it wasn't working painting around them. i am pleased with the result , quite a tidy job Only problem i had was getting the red oxide off my face , let me tell you - white spirit stings for approx 36 hours once you have washed your face in it Next week the weather is set to be good weather , i am preparing myself to put the epoxy on then , i will be using a spray gun for the very first time , its an unknown to me so i will be just getting stuck in and hope for the best
I have now sprayed the 2 liter of rust buster epoxy mastic on the van , i started by spraying it but it didn't go on too well , i then tried with a small roller , that wasn't much success , i reverted back to the spray gun but added abit more of the thinners supplies and hey presto went on a treat by spray gun . The only problem being that the two liter only covered the area that the sand baster - blasted so i now need to order some more to do from the rear "axle" to the back. i will probably buy another two liter pack so i have plenty to finish the job and i will probably use what remains on other items i refurbish as i go along it wasn't too dirty a job to be honest , only problem i found was as the van is only up on axle stands , as i crawled around on my back underneath whilst spraying , i often wiped the epoxy mastic off onto my overalls , i settled to a system of starting at the front and shuffled my way to the back , quite enjoyable and satisfying to do , and the finish looks very good Any advice re stone-chip ?? What is the best product for this? how should i apply it? where do i apply t (all over or just the wheel tubs)? do i need a special application gun. i will post a few pics of progress so far when i get half a chance
Some pics of the work so far , i appreciate that i have missed a few areas on the pics but i have gone over those areas after taking the photos so all is nice and coated with plenty of epoxy mastic
