Trailer tents / folding caravans ... thoughts ...

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by marowak, Aug 24, 2013.

  1. The possibility of owning another van is perhaps a year or two away - but I still want to go camping and not only in a normal tent.

So I've been thinking about having a trailer tent as a short term solution.

This would involve getting a tow bar fitted to the Note and possibly a roof rack - but in my mind - it seems like a good idea.

Has anyone here got one, had one - or have any advise about them.

I think we'd be looking for a 4 berth kind of thing with a small kitchen area.
Dont want one of those ones that also has a mega awning area - just the area the size of the trailer.

    Thanks good folk of TLB

  2. Nearly bought one once but understand ther'e a pain in the proverbial to erect (oh err mrs) so i'm looking towards a blow-up tent instead. Goes up in next to no time with a compressor pump, bing.............there you go

    Tuesday wildchild I'm a circle!

I know a couple from up that north who have a folding caravan. Yes I did say a folding caravan, it has ridged walls which all fold down flat for towing. If a recall right its a 50`s van.

  5. so - after a bit of research - its a folding camper we want - not a full on trailer tent ... just need to look into how much it costs to get a tow bar fitted

  6. You can get a nice vintage one......I say go for it...

  7. I like the dandy ones

  8. Portafold , rapido, esterel, all are good if a bit overpriced.

On a serious note ive just been on holidaywith my lady and 3 children. 4 9 and 11
The van is big enough for all of us ,van sleeps 5 ,
if we stay put on a camp site but i like to move around and it takes ages putting everything away so im thinking of getting a tear drop trailer complete with double bed fridge and cooker its just the thought of towing that puts me of

  10. Get a puck! Barely know its on the back

We had this for a couple of years, light to tow n LOADS of interior space!!!
Took about 10 mins to put up properly, awning was massive but real heavy!!!!

Now we have this, as the good lady wife got bored of having to build the caravan when we got there!

I think I preferred the rapido like!!!!

  12. I have one Pennie been away for two weeks you can put it up in 20 min and the awing in about 15mins would I get rid no, would I swap for a caravan no.
    it was great!!

  13. Don't forget to pack plenty of knee high white socks and take a pair of sandles

  15. Marowak dude

My mum still has the trailer tent in the garage that we used to use as a family growing up
Since me and my sister have grown up and my dad has passed away she has no use for it now
Its a conway model and does have a bit of an awning but its not massive and is very compact when towed
My late father looked after everything very well so im sure its still in great condition as its been stored on its side on special rollers in the garage for years

I can ask my mum what model it is and if she is willing to part with it if you want?

  16. im rather pleased with the love for these on here ...

@paradox - that's a very kind offer and i'd be interested to know what she's doing with it - but will also keep looking down this way as i'd have to get it and a return to you and back on fuel would be rather costly.

i think the plan may be to try and get one pre-winter camp ... maybe ....

  17. OMG that is the one we had in the '70's (only ours was green) - it had 2 double beds and a kitchenette area - ideal for camping as it simply folds out / in - takes about 5 mins to erect IIRC. My mum and sisters used to sleep in that while my dad and I slept in the van :)

  18. My mums located in bolton so its not as far as i am up here in north yorkshire

Ill give her a bell and ask her if she wants to part with it
