Track width...

  1. The wheel saga continues. I have a pair of thin spacers up front, I guess they're about 5mm which will enable the fitting of my gaudy wheels, they're needed as the wheel won't sit flush to the hub due to the little lip on the hub. It works and they'll fit nice. The rears fit flush so I don't need spacers. I've fitted 195 tyres up front. If I can get 205 on the rear will that leave me with a wider track at the rear (about the 5mm) or are the front and rear track already different?

My thinking is that if front and rear track are the same and I fit 195 on the back I'll end up with a wider front track which isn't preferable. If I go for wider rears it will balance with a marginally wider track at the rear, which is preferable.

    Does this make sense?

  2. Never had a car with a wider front track. No reason I can see why it would matter. My Elise had a wider rear track - I guess to accommodate the much wider rear tyres and to help with roll stiffness at the rear due to the large rearwards weight bias. It probably makes a difference in this instance for a car designed for track use, but not for a bay window van.
