Although founded in 2002, the First Tolkien Reading Day wasn’t until March 25th 2003. This is because a journalist from New York enquired as to whether or not there was such an event for Tolkien in January 2002 and the society liked the idea so much they adopted it – although they didn’t have time to prepare anything for that year and postponed it.

The society chose an important date from the book for the reading day. March 25th is the Downfall of Sauron.

In recent years The Tolkien Society have provided information packs, bookmarks and posters for schools taking part in this event. They have also provided free posters for events held by libraries and the general public taking place near to the event, rather than on the 25th.

I read Lord of the Rings a few times over the years. These days I'd recommend Game of Thrones or The Wheel of Time over Tolkien, but he was the first so he deserves his own day.

Sat next to a lady on the plane yesterday who was reading Lord of the Rings. Thought that was a bit optimistic for the journey from Venice to Gatwick... the train connection on Southern Rail once back in the uk, that was a different story - she could have finished the bloody trilogy!!

  4. we read the Hobbit when we did english at school 2 nd year i think. I don't think our English teacher Mr Wallace was a fan, We were asked to write a story on a western... so i started my story something like Big John walk into the Bar and asked for a high ball.
M y teacher Wallace said whats a high ball, i said a type of whiskey could of been bourbon, but iat the time i only knew of the later,Theres no such thing he said, I said there is in my Western,,
never got into the films that were made.. just too long, well made but too long.

Any one written any Books and had them Publish or self Publish.
