Operas have been captivating audiences since the sixteenth century, and this highly revered art form continues to gain new enthusiasts today. An opera is a piece of performance art that combines music with text, and is often a dramatic enacting of a story, complete with acting, scenery and costumes.

We're having a cultural week on here. I've actually never been to an Opera - I find musicals a bit hard to stomach, so I'm guessing that I'd struggle a bit. Any fans out there?

  2. Never been to an opera, nearest thing to an opera I suppose was watching Les Mis in the theatre. That was superb
Are we allowed to say "it's not over until the Fat Lady sings" any more in this PC world?

Charlie boy wants to know when you are going to collect the hamper you left behind...he's not impressed with the mess you made ( but he's keeping the bivvy).[IMG]

Agreed, although Turandot has been my favourite since I was a young 'un.
I don't think Jussi Bjorling has been surpassed as Calaf.

  14. Turandot is also my favourite - I think the first two acts are some of the best music ever composed. I just couldn't find a YouTube clip of anything other than Nessun Dorma...

  15. Watched the live broadcast of La Boheme from Covent Garden on the big screen in our local Guildhall last week. Astonishingly good, comfy seats, table for drinks and nibbles, and only £15 each. Views of the sets were brilliant, highly recommended....
