The year is 2001, the portable electronics industry is booming, and the CD player is the hottest personal musical device around. Little did they know that the music world was about to be rocked to its core by a quiet computer company that’s set on changing everything. Enter the iPod, a compact and durable device capable of holding the entire contents of most peoples CD collections. With a price tag of $399, it was scooped up by affluent music enthusiasts to compile their entire collection into one place. For the first time in music history it was possible to have any song you wanted available at a touch of a button. In a master stroke, iTunes was released in January of the same year, and the music industry scooped up the opportunity to provide songs on a piece meal basis. With these two powerful tools, the iPod was set to change the world. History has shown that Apple’s ambitions were both met and exceeded. I think I still have a couple kicking around somewhere. Whose still using one?
I still have one, but a few years back I updated itunes and it never worked properly again aparently a quiet common bug with no fix at he time.
I still use mine - nice and compact - fits into top pocket -hundreds of tunes on it - it's still a modern marvel to me
Yep. Still use mine. Had to restore it though the other day as it was playing silly beggars but it does that from time to time as it gets older. Doesn't work like it used to. Bit like me
Excellent news,I'm just off to get some new needles for it and get rid of that dog the keeps sitting in front of the horn
Iv still got an iPod classic that just about still works...although the screen doesn't light up anymore, so you have to shine a torch at it to see what you're doing... They would have been a lot better if they had binned iTunes from the start though!
I've still got 3 of the 160g Classic ipoos. So far all are still working. I use my Cowon Plenue D2 for day to day use.
I’ve still got iPods..... they do exactly what I want from a music player, and far better than using my phone. I’m a bit old fashioned I think: a music player for playing music, and phone for making phone calls.... Well, the phone does a bit more than just that, but you know what I mean! I’ve got 4 iPods kicking around in various states of repair, but only the 2 160gb ones are much good anymore.
Out of curiosity, as a vinyl enthusiast, (I think?) how do you rate the sound quality of digital moosic? Perhaps this should be another thread..
I got a 1st gen click wheel , now long gone but still have a classic iPod that I almost feel guilty about not using I had loads of mischief on building sites when I got my first iPod , plugged an fm transmitter into it - tuned it into the same frequency as the plasterers we’re listening to in their radio and played really pants music over the top
Haha good question. And yes, vinyl enthusiast Way back in the mists of time, my final post grad dissertation at Art College was on this very subject.... Mini disc and DCC were fairly new, and the few things still being released on vinyl were of such poor quality that they weren’t worth buying. But I believed back then that a difference could definitely be heard. Digital sound just lacked a bit to my ears. I said then that I’d never give up on analogue mediums as long as they existed.... and I haven’t..... but realistically, can I hear the difference these days? Hmmmm. I do think vinyl is warmer and less clinical, but sampling rates these days are phenomenal so can I hear any difference between my favourite albums direct from the disc or after I’ve digitised them and played them on my iPod? Honestly, probably not. And the iPod is very convenient. The equipment and speakers that it all get played through have to be considered too..... and also I’m talking about analogue to digital conversion, rather than digitally produced from the start, which must be another thing entirely. Blimey, this was supposed to be a short answer!! Haha. Maybe another thread...... I’m sure @Terrordales will have some thoughts on the subject
