The legend of how the croissant came to be is that in 1683, the Turkish Empire laid siege on Vienna, Austria. The Turks made several attempts to conquer the city by force, but were unsuccessful, so decided to try underground tunnels. The bakers of Vienna, who worked in the basement storerooms, heard the sound of digging and alerted the cities army. For their vigilance, the bakers received high honours and thanks for their assistance in outwitting the Turks. In celebration, they baked their bread in the shape of a crescent moon—the symbol of the Ottoman Empire. After the Turks were defeated, it became custom to serve morning coffee with the crescent-shaped pastry. The legend continues to say that over a hundred years later, Marie Antoinette introduced the pastry to the French who dubbed it a “croissant”.
Can't get my head around them ..... look / sound so appealing...... but it's just puff pastry toast with no real substance .....typically French I suppose!
Two hours into my working day and it’s shaping up to be ‘one of those’...... maybe I need croissants, lots of them, with chocolate.
nom! un bol de chocolat chaud pour moi! but only if it's made with water, the dairy overload is waaay too much
Nah.....sorry... you're not convincing me....perhaps if I had one brought to me all hot and buttery .... but I've gone off then by the time I try to put anything on.
cant beat a bit of hot crumpet or pikelets with lashings of butter non of these foreign imports Sacre Blue
ahh, i was thinking of a chateau... memories I've never camped in france, i prefer quirky little houses or waking up in a chateau that said, i have slept in the car after getting lost and tired. Woke up to folk peering in as it was a sunday morning and i'd managed to park up in the village square outside the church!
We have a standing order with the village shop for 4 croissants* on a Saturday, so Sunday and Monday are our croissant days and yes, with home made strawberry or raspberry jam. Our weekend treat! * They get them delivered from the magnificent Stonehouse Bakery in Danby.
