I do miss @Terrordales Australia day is celebrated annually on January 26th, as that marks the anniversary of the 1788 arrival of the First Fleet of British Ships at New South Wales as well as the raising of the flag of Great Britain at that location. In present-day Australia, however, celebrations focus much less on the arrival of the aforementioned ships, and instead concentrate more on the diverse society and landscape of the nation. Many community and family events are organised, as well as various celebrations welcoming new immigrants. Australia is a relatively young country, as federation occurred just over 100 years ago in 1901, so it was not until 1935 that Australia Day was actually celebrated.
I'll wear my old Aussie leather hat to football this afternoon, and listen to some Cold Chisel and Australian Crawl on the stereo in celebration; might be a tad damp to light the barbecue, mind. It's about the only country I've travelled to where I felt completely at home and thought I could proper go and live; Perth is ace. Happy Australia Day then
Ha ha, good point! Proper football, none of this Aussie ‘as far as I could tell complete lack of’ rules.
Nah, that's egg chasing, for people that are too clumsy to use their feet - so they pick the ball up and run away from everyone else!
Gotta love an Aussie with a ginger mullet. Just perfect. Good bassline Might have to revisit a bit of Sunny Boys too now...
Dud anyone else ever go to The Church on Sundays? It was a big railway warehouse behind Kings Cross that opened as a pretty wild pub/club during Sunday daytime - filled with Aussies and Kiwis- absolute carnage in there.
Didn't actually spend that much time in Sydney, headed off north / west a few weeks after I landed. Been back once since for a few days on the way back from New Zealand; really must head back for a longer stint again. Edit, just realised you're meaning Kings Cross London, not Sydney. Doh!
My mate was the DJ every other week. Before then I’m sure it was on the Charing Cross road somewhere. We had a lot of fun in the 80s!
Excellent, was my first choice of posting but I thought I would show the Aussies in their true cultural richness.
