  2. Ok so now I have a bit of a thing for that Matt black one with the red thunder clap and the white walls.........

  3. Be careful that you don't just use the term 'rat look' to hide the fact that its a knackered van (not saying yours is of course:eek:) that needs a rebuild. To many folks these days are using the term to run round in stuff that should be in a scarp yard:rolleyes: Rat look or patina, are they the same or different? I love patina but am no fan of rat, its just hiding to much..

  4. Reminds me of a van we saw at an event (druridge bay) with rusting plug welds visible all over, the cills, bottom of panels. Had lovely shiny wheels but!
But hey, if people like it!

  5. Just for you @Row complete with plastic Mr T on top!

  9. Err yes it is , basically we painted him oxide as it was a repair job and I loved the colour ....but he is indeed in need of a rebuild ....but far from the scrap yard yet I hope , but I think he is a rat with a bit of difference .. ...and he matches his owner :D

Rat looks good if it's happened naturally.
One thats "been ratted" will normally look gash imho.

Yep - vehicles sanded down in obvious non wear points to invite rust, or paint that's been aged in places where it can't have aged look yawningly the same.

Patina - or 'survivor' is THE best look on old vehicles for me.

  14. The patina on my old panel was caused by years of being neglected in a barn covered in pigeon s*** by the previous owner I pained the logos on and flatted them to match. Still the most solid RHD Late bay I have ever worked on. I regret selling it every day but still get to see it driving around at a few shows which always makes me smile.

  15. My bay is pretty patina, with faded paint and the odd rust patch. I'm contemplating fixing it up and painting properly but I think id miss the fact I dont have to be precious about it as it stands now....if it gets scuffed it just adds to the overall look whereas if I had a shiny show bus i'd worry about it every time I parked it up lol rat done well can look good....problem is most arent that well done. I love the look of a lot of the Hayburner featured stuff.....natural wear and tear beats tryhard fake rust every time imo :)

A proper rat isn't "done" at all. It just happens.

  17. True , we are making the T4 'sparkle ' let the obsession with polishing begin ....as for our bay, chuck a bucket of water at it and it is sorted ;)

  18. I wouldnt necessarily agree......rat look in the watercooled vw world is often a created look.... whereaspatina is more of a naturally occurring look I would venture to suggest

    Ah I see!
In that case I shall revise my comment:
In water-cooled all rat looks contrived and therefore awful.
In air-cooled; natural rat can look great, fake normally looks awful.
    All imho of course.
