I've got some gloss black rustoleum to paint my bits with ;D Some of the bits I have shot blasted (so are nicely keyed) and some are 'virgin bare metal' so should I still use etch primer before painting? I've read rustoleum is a primer & top coat all in one so wondered if primer is still needed? I have used POR15 over etch primer in the past .....and the POR15 hasnt taken to it that well your advice, as always, greatly apreciated
I've not used it on bare metal, on bits i've painted with it that were bare metal i've gone cross branded and used over por15 metal ready which is an etch too.
thanks guys some do some dont then ;D I think it will depend on how impatient I get as to wheather I prime or not ;D
if they are suspension parts or stuff under the van that will be covered in road spray i would use por15 on the blasted metal (as it will key correctly) as its tougher than rustoleum and dries harder and faster, but you can paint over bare metal with rustoleum i did it on my last bay and it lasted ok
always prime , it stops the metal oxidising and gives the top coat some to key too , thats why shot blasting bear metal they tell ye to prime straight a way , cause you cant see any thing ye thing its ok , but the process has all readey started once bear metaled owen nw
thanks every one I've started painting stuff the stuff I've shot blasted in the last few days I've just painted, the 'virgin metal' I've etch primed first. ............check back in 10years to find out with was best ;D
I've given painted/bare/wirebrushed rust areas a splashing with Metalready (good stuff), then painted straight over with Rustoleum. No signs of rust yet.
i normaly use high build primer then the rusto over that ,i even painted and old bit of tin were with out cleaning it then left it out side and still no rust . great stuff just dont dry as fast as i would like
Ive found when using enamel paint it doesent like going straight over the top of fresh bright steel A few coats will cover it and it looks pretty but it chips or peels easily When used over the top of a misting of etch prime its more durable and takes less coats It loves to go over the top of steel with surface rust and adhears well the oils in the paint also soak into light surface rust and stops it oxidising further
id say the mastic too dont get me wrong i like the rusto and it will stick to anything and give a good coat but id try the mastic first then paint over that
Get them acid dipped then galvanised Use a mordant solution then paint them in 2 pack They will be rot free for years to come
