you need a app called emoji it adds a extra keyboard to the standard iPhone ones =

 

I use it on the IPad and on my phone, if you download emoji free a kind of world symbol appears on you keyboard and allows you to use emotions like these

If you have a 4s go to settings-general-keyboard-international keyboard-scroll down to emoji and enable it. No need to download it, it's already there. Don't know if this is true on earlier I phones😃

Most of them are showing as just a square box on my computer

mark, as you have windows 7 there is a program called 'snipping tool' that lets you take an image of your screen. You just use your mouse to square over what you want then save the image.
