timing

  1. I have been trying to sort the crap running of the van, 1600 TP stock, and when I have the timing set at 7.5 BTDC just occasionally the mark in the strobe jumps to just after TDC. Can this just be crappy points? They aren't that old and don't look warn. I have swapped the cap and rotor to rule out cracks in those and have new plugs and leads on order but assume it must be dizzy end to cause such a late spark?

  2. just received my accuspark ignition module and the rubber grommet is square but the cable hole is round - it's an aftermarket distributor only a couple of years old. Are the Bosch ones different? Anyone else fitted these and had to chop the grommet up to get it to fit?

  3. Can't usefully help with the possible Accuspark problem but the occaisional jump in the indicated timing may be the moving base plate for the points sticking....assuming you have a standard vacuum pot on the carb. If so just let go the pot and turn the plate by hand it should move easily ...usual sticking point is under the little retaining clip that bears on it. A smidgin of grease applied after cleaning up can work wonders.

  4. Had exactly the same on my Accupsark elec ignition i've just fitted.

Just poke the square rubber grommet through the round hole in the dizzy with a small screwdriver very carefully so you don;lt go through the wire and once you've got the lip of the rubber grommet through it'll fit fine - it's a bit of a tight squeeze but it should go through.

My timing was all over the shop as the top shaft of my dizzy was sticking on the bottom shaft and the mechanical advance mechanism was not returning as it should.

I stripped and cleaned my dizzy but it was still sticking so I bought a new accuspark dizzy, which seems to have cured the problem.

    Hope this helps.
