Timing Problem

  1. Just had my engine reconditioned on my 1978 2.0L Bay and it's just had it's 500 mile running in oil change.

I noticed the idle was running fast especially when the engine was warm so when it went in for it's oil change i told my mechanic it was either the Accelator cable or a sticking throttle boot butterfly clip which is what the engine builder told me it may be.

The garage has tightened up the accelator cable as much as he can and now when it's cold you need to need to keep your foot slightly on the accelarator to stop it stalling but when the engine is warm it is still idling to fast but not as bad.

The mechanic told me I might need a new throttle mechanism.

Any ideas or help would be much appreciated.

  2. sounds like porkies to me. if it was running a bit fast it was probly do to timing being a bit too advance.

Where the carbs rebuilt as part of the reconditioning or are they old?? If they are and they have play in them then you'll be going mad trying to sort it. By all means get the timing checked but also have those carbs looked at.

  4. The Carbs are the old ones. The engine was reconditioned by the Engine Shop. Running sweet except the fast idling.

If it is the Carbs what would need to be done to them and is it easy for someone like me to do (absolute novice)

  5. adjust the timing yourself to what the book says and see if that works ....i agree with pmacs about da porkies(lies)

  6. Sorry everyone who's answered but I have a 2 litre Fuel injection therefore I don't have carbs???

Sounds more like a fueling issue to me rather than timing.
Timing is easy to check though so may as well give it a go.
