Looking at buying this bike rack, anyone used one or know if it tilts enough to access the engine bay? It's a Thule Euroride 941 Thanks, Stu
I haven't used this one but I had a tow bar mounted bike rack and it tilted just enough to check the oil and open the tailgate
I've got a Thule (although an older one), and you can get engine access (but you wouldn't want to work with it in place).
Its quite likely that using special spider monkey arms and a mirror you wouldnt need to tilt it to open the engine hatch - but that depends on whether your towbar is like mine where the metalwork supports the bumper and tow ball about 4 inches back or one hole pitch from original. Also such towbar mounted carriers are low down and some way back from the rear wheels, so they will tend to have variable ground clearance, and may well contact rocks, fence posts, trees in campsites, car park bollards etc. or ground out on leaving filling stations where there is a steep ramp in and a deep gutter. In Bristol there is a filling station up the hill from the hospital where my towbar grounded... Personally I am happier with the cheaper frame type that rests on the towbar but has the crossbars of the bikes suspended about chest height. With a light board tied across.. My bus is 75mm lowered which doesnt help.
This is the one I'm looking at, Watling from JK.. Also, needs to be wheel supporting carrier due to the type of bikes it'll be carrying, various different frame shapes..
You could mount the same arrangement as I have with that tow bar. The rack slides on a bracket mounted to the tow ball bolts and steadied with straps. Easy to slide off and on with bikes on or not. Can't remember the manufacturer as I bought it about 15 years ago. Can carry two bikes easily. Happy hunting. Edit. Noticed that you want a wheel mounting rack, this won't be suitable.
