Those pesky window seals!

  1. Hi,

Have have recently got my type 2 camper van back from the spray booth and have tried over the past couple of weekends to put my windows back in. I was told to warm the seals up and fit them around the glass, I used a washing line (rope in plastic coating), fed through the grove in the seal, which I used to try and pull the window into place but no success!

I was expecting this to be difficult but wondered whether:

    1) have I got the right method
    2) is there an easier method?
    3) are there an video that I could watch?

Factory Windows or panel van conversion?

  3. What lube you using ?

  4. Cord might a bit thin:thinking: try something a bit thicker ;)and lube yes I mean lube :Dit's the best thing going but upto you if you like it to smell nice ;)

  5. ...when you say using the cord to pull the windows in ...what do you mean?

thread the cord into the seal as you have been doing leaving a loop top and bottom

get the window in the opening, thump it into place so the seal is right up against the 'lip'

with some one on the outside thumping the glass where you are pulling the tread, pull the thread about 45 degrees upwards and away from the glass, this should pull the seal over the lip which is all you are trying to do with the thread.

do a little in each direction on the bottom, then the same on the top

this vid should give you the idea

  6. Thanks all,

It's a Panel van conversion, I was using Vaseline as the lube.

You should be putting the rubber on the metal opening first then working the glass in if it's a panel conversion, I presume you have the rubbers that require an insert to go in afterwards?

  8. Strimmer Nylon cord works well

  9. I thought vaseline damages the rubber?? my dad said not to use it...

  10. Try silicon spray on the seals instead of the vaseline.

  11. Waxoyl works well and helps keep the tin worm at bay.
    Bit messy though

  12. Thanks everyone,

Your comments are really helpful. I spoke to the VW heritage guys today to check I have the right seals, which they confirmed I did Phew!! I also ordered some silicon spray.

Looking forward to the weekend to try again

    Thanks again all

  13. Dont use Vaseline, it will rot the rubber. Also don't use shower gel, they use sodium chloride as a thickener.
