testing voltage regulators

  1. Hi All I was wondering if there is a way to test type 4 voltage regulators without installing them on the fire wall and plugging them in, I bought a job lot of 2nd hand parts and there was 2 regs ive got enough crap in the garage already, want to know if they are worth hanging onto or not

If you have an adjustable power supply and a 12 volt light bulb, yes.
Connect variable power supply +ve to D+, connect -ve to D-, connect lightbulb between DF and -ve

The DF field current output will drive the light bulb on if the voltage on the voltage sense/regulator supply D+ is under 14 volts, increasing the current as the D+ voltage drops.

  3. thanks mike, unfortunatly no power supply just left a job where I had access to one will install them one day when I have time and see how they go

You could probably make up something with a stack of batteries, or some regulated mains adaptors in series with each other..like a 5v and a 12v one .. 12 volts : field on , 17 volts : field off.
