testing fuel tank

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by chris_g, Nov 5, 2011.

  1. Hi, fuel tank out today top filler hose split, cracking to bottom hose but no real signs of a leak although bad smell of petrol in bus.
Does anyone know of a good way to test the tank as i want to be sure before putting it all back again.

    Thanks Chris.

  2. Sorry i forgot, is it standard that the fuel exit pipe is welded into the bottom of the tank or is it usually a union?

    Silly question time from me:

Do you still have a bulkhead over the gas tank?? I only ask this as I've seen several buses in the past that have had them cut out to gain access to the tank.

As long as the pipes are good and secured then you shouldn't have fuel smells coming in. Make sure your gas tank breathers are also renewed and secured both around the tank and in the engine bay.

  4. Yes, bulkhead is still there.
There has been a access hatch cut in above the fuel sender unit but this is well sealed, the smell of petrol was very strong up hill and when going around roundabouts.
When i removed the tank i expected there to be some signs that the fuel had been leaking but nothing obvious?? I am planning to replace all the connecting rubber pipes do you think i should replace the yellow plastic breather pipes as well?

    Thanks Chris.

Sorry I didn't explain myself. Yes replace all the rubber joins in the breather system while you have the tank out. Also check you don't have a leak from a carb.

  6. I'm thinking of blanking off all the holes in the tank and pumping it up with air.
    What do you think?

  7.
  8.
  9. Change all the rubber bits - the yellow plastic hoses will be fine. Unlikely the tank itself is leaking. Take the fuel sender out and have a good look around inside. Later Bays have the outlet pipe brazed in position, with no little fuel filter.

  10. Im probably just getting paranoid about it, When squeezed the fuel filler pipe is cracked but doesnt seem to be all the way through. I will replace all the rubber and hopefully all will be ok.

    Thanks for the input.

  11. change the filler pipe as well (and the elbow by the filler cap). then you're all done.

  12. Having the same problem on ours ! can this hose be changed through the inspection hole or is it an engine out job?

    Cheers

  13. i changed my filler hose with the engine in, just removed the air filter box and a few other bits to help access, it is still tight and you need to be a bit double jointed, i got a few scrapes on the arm. i also managed to do it from leaning over the back seat into the engine bay that way as well as from the back.

Mine is a type 4 engine by the way

  14. Just change all rubberware.

If you've got the tank out, visual inspection should show up any leaks if it's not too rusty.

Early tanks had the screw-in union/filter, later tanks just had a brazed pipe.
