Testing a voltage regulator

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Borninabug, Jul 8, 2014.

  1. While trying to resolve a misfire I was checking and cleaning all electrical connections. Regulator was very hot. Is this correct and can i test it with a meter

I think you test them in situ Bud. I can't see how they would show a proper charging rate without being run!

  4. Anybody know how hot they should get?

  5. If its an external one ? and there is perhaps aheat dissapation via the attatchment too bulkhead, and leckie is flowing thru the internal components not the external casing ,prob not so very hot , if it is an external origional one they can be removed and opened for a butchers( and if really keen ,(or Scottish) repaired, ,if not ,ignore this reply.ok, here is some more> given that mine is bolted to the foremost left hand side corner ,if it needed cooling air i reckon mr Porche would have located it elsewhere(on the roof)

  6. Mine gets too hot to touch at the base. May get one from gsf. About £22 and just try it

  7. I've never checked whether ours gets hot, but I will.
We have a Type IV engine with a metal cased voltage regulator. Is yours the same?

One way to test the voltage regulator is to measure the battery voltage with the engine running. Should be between 13 and 14.4 volts, and should not shoot up if you rev the engine.

Turn all the lights, blowers, heated screen, radio, (anything electrical) on - and check it's still in the same range.

If so, the voltage regulator is doing its job.
