Testing a rev counter

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by grub, Jul 29, 2018.

  1. Hi.
Does anyone know whether it's possible to test a rev counter without connecting it to my bus & without any specialist equipment?
    Thanx

    I very much doubt it.
I stand to be corrected though!

  3. Not really. But easy enough to lash up down the back of your bus.

  4. Try connecting it to any other vehicle of the era. 3 simple connections - either side of the coil and earth

  5. Just plug it into the bus in the engine bay and test it there before running cables.

If you can find it you can connect it to an AC 9 volt transformer with a resistor and this will show 1500 rpm or 25x2 = 50 pulses a second.

Or just connect 12 volt power and tap the CB wire to 12 volts or 0 volts. The needle should start to move with a few taps.

  7. My only concern us that I connect it to my bus & it damages my ignitor electronic ignition module if there is an issue with the rev counter?

  8. It's unlikely to, if it's the usual voltage-operated type. Go for it.

The only real way your ignitor will be fried is if you forget to take care and wire it up backwards (black to black is BAD) while testing the rev counter...

  10. Thanks guys. Rev counter came out of a ford Capri!
