Tempermental ignition switch

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by paradox, Feb 14, 2012.

  1. My ignition switch is tempermental on the last part of the rotation to fire the starter

Do i need a new barrel and key or is there a switch part that can be replaced?
How difficult of a job is it?

It will be the switch part, easy if awkward job.

Depending on the year it is a grub screw and a lot of fiddling.

This is the bit you need to dig out the bottom of your column.

    Have fun ;)

Almost forgot this is off a 78

  4. Mines a 78 so wheres the best to buy a replacement from?

I take it the steering wheel and plastic shroud all need to come off?

  5. you'll get a replacement part pretty much anywhere they sell vw parts, that is the same part used on watercooled VW's Golf mk2, etc..

The steering wheel, wiper switches and the plastic bit all have to come off.. including the aluminum casing with the lock.

it's all easy on a '78 as the steering wheels don't get stuck as easy as on early splines.
worst part is the shread-bolt, but i've found a fairly easy way to get that off, if you still have one that is.

use a Torx socket (a good quality one, preferably in one piece, not in bit's), [IMG]
drill a hole in the center of the screw that is slightly smaller than the socket. then hammer the socket into the hole and turn. As easy as that.

These also work great on shredded allen key bolts that hold the CV joints.

  6. Cheers for the tips sven

Im confused by the shread bolt where is that located?

  7. on the bottom side of the plastic cover, you'll see a round hole through it. inside you'll either see an allen head bolt or a blank head bolt.
