Temperature

  1. Here's a pic of one of the plugs..
On test with the dipstick I put it in a kettle of boiling water and the guage read 128c...surely that's wrong!!!
The pressure sender is a 10 bar and the guage is 5 bar so that may be my oressure probs solved... She also looks like she's running lean

  2. Plug tip does look a bit too white.

What size are your main jets?

  4. Never had the carbs apart zed! Will have to take a look! Looks like it's lean to me?

When you say it doesn't pop through the revs, just how high are you revving it? If you don't know, how fast, what gear? It might not struggle at lower revs, but still be lean and pop only at 3500 or 4000 rpm in my experience. Or might only pop under heavy load, but it would still be lean.
If in doubt go rich is the best advice.
Another clue is how quickly it warms up. To be up to 100 degs I would have guessed you'd be driving for 15-20 minutes and at 50mph it probably wouldn't get much hotter.

Then again I thought you'd showed that the oil actually wasn't too hot and that your sender/gauge were over reading?

  6. Yes that is wrong. You need to test your dipstick alongside a normal thermometer in boiling water and see what they both read.

My dipstick sender was 5c different to normal thermometer, yours is at least 28c out!

  7. Yes i have new temp sender on the way, a sump plate type and i iwll also test it alongside a normal thermometer, ill try and find a guide on these twin weber carb and change the mixture also @zed and see what it comes back with, if anyone has a tuning guide/instruction let me know! but fingers crossed it may be a combination of bad readings and it being to lean.

  8. Hello every one I`ve had my van a while now and have always wondered what the average running temp is on these vans . I have a 1641 type 1 with 2 34 webbers that I have just rebuilt, and at 50 / 55 on a run 180F / 82c does that sound about right ,
I`ll admit he don't seem that hot when I stop, but like I said I would like to have an average to gauge things.

  9. sounds alot better then my temperatures!!!

  10. 82 degrees is nothing to be scared of.....

  11. Is your gauge working properly? They seem very low. Your oil needs to hit 100ÂșC from time to time to drive off all the evil stuff.

Ok I must have about the only accurate dipstick sender and gauge setup.
If it reads 128 degrees in boiling water then its a mismatch of the sender and the gauge . Some googling shows VDO changed their senders several times over the years and a 30 degrees difference could just be e.g. a 2004 year sender and a 2008 year gauge..

Which means that you still may end up with a crazy combination if you buy new. it may not be faulty just incompatible.

    Adam Ant?

  14. I'm glad someone got it! I've been humming it ever since I posted that

  15. The only time the gauge goes higher is on the rare times i drive up to say 65 mph then the gauge goes up to 220F .

I just climbed three hills in a row on the M27 from the A36 Totton bypass junction heading east doing 60-65mph and managed to get the oil temperature up to 115C for a bit in ambient 25C. Cooled down to about 100 after a mile at 40mph on the flat.
