temperature gauge

  1. Hi guys iv noticed I have a temperature gauge in the van that someone has installed however it doesn't work. I have been wondering were it gets its signal from as its aircooled? Also have a battery/voltage gauge that also doesn't work any help to get these working would be great the engine is a 1600 t1 thanks John

  2. Is it an Oil temp or Cylinder Head Temp gauge?
Often a dipstick sender is used for Oil temp with a type 1.

Is there any wiring attached to these gauges? They may have been "fitted" but not connected up...

  3. Yeah all the wiring is there and I think its an oil gauge? I just dont no were it would pick the signal up from the dipstick is a normal one?

  4. In that case it might be a sump sensor? Have a look underneath the engine and see if it has a sensor screwed in? failing that the oil sensing dip switch might have been replaced?

  5. If its Oil Temp then the gauge range will be something in the order of 50 -150C

  6. or 180-300F... It's pretty simple, with the oil temperature gauge a "switched positive" (wire from the fuse box that's live when the car is turned on, and has no voltage when it's switched off) goes to the back of the gauge via a fuse, then the earth for it runs through the van to the oil drain plug, which will have a little spade connector on it. As the temperature varies, the amount of resistance in the circuit changes, and the meter reading is altered.

There will be a seperate lighting circuit attached to it as well, which can either be connected to the same switched live (light on the gauge will be on all the time) or to the light switch/existing dashboard lights. Fuse this too.

Your voltmeter is the same, but without going to the drain plug- just take it to any earthing point, bolt or screw that goes back into the body :)

  7. Post up a picture.
If you fix the voltmeter, the oil gauge might also start working. They'll both need an ignition switched live, which is possibly missing.

  8. Some pics of the gauges in the van hope it can help shed some light on them :)

  9. If you search on VDO oil gauges you can download a wiring diagram.

One thing from the second pic above, check that the terminal with the two blue wires is properly crimped.

If you're going to be doing a bit of wiring in future it pays to get a decent set of crimping pliers. Good rachet ones will cost £20+ but will crimp up much more consistently and also seal up the insulator all in one go. I got ones made by Laser a few years ago.

  10. Iv been having a look round on the web ect and iv noticed I dont have the sender unit on the engine so im pritty sure I need to find the correct sender for the gauge?
