Last time I did a bed I got "seating" foam, I'm a lightweight and didn't make much impression on it, it was too firm for me even as a seat. :(
Always had a foam mattress in a house and very comfy they are too - I should have rescued it TBH and cut it up for the camper, but I didn't and it's too late now + it's nice to have new.

I have room for just 3" thickness so too soft and I'll go right through it.

Tricky, I don't want to get it wrong again.

  2. 3 inch is too thin for me so cant help there as im a tad more "robust". I used 4 inch. mine was the grey stuff which is about right for me.

  3. give this chap a ring. Tell him what you want! I found him helpful, even gave me a lesson on how to fit the wadding and stockinette. Not on your manor though which of course could be an issue but if you manage to gauge what you want then you could go more local!.

  4. there is two different qualities of blue foam, i think it comes down to the material used to make the foam itself but alot of companies try and steer you away from the blue and go for the grey, When looking into it last year I decided to go for 3 inch blue they 1 of grey with a knee roll adding an extra inch to the under knee section, I intend to shape mine to my custom bed shape curvy with slight head rests taller than the standard back, but remember, testing the foam by sitting on it or laying on it is a bit deceptive as the vinyl/leather/cloth you upholster it with will make the foam firmer than the foam by itself, so go slightly too soft with the foam then the upholstery material will firm it back up to level desired. I hope that makes sense.. I spoke to Hogg Upholstery on 01142 487308 and he was pretty helpful and I may use him for mine, he's based in Sheffield but very knowledgeable. hope this helps you bud

how come you only have room for 3 inch?

It's how the bed boards are situated in seat position, I'll double check, maybe I can squeeze 4" in (ooer missus).

  6. The wadding makes more of a difference than you would imagine too!

  7. Which hinges?

  8. yeah its surprising how mush support it gives to your weight then with the material on top, what was a soft foam then turns into a hard option and there's no giving it back lol!

  9. I used 4" with a medium wadding, stockinette and a cloth cover. Hinges were Westy repros (NLA) herein, possibly lies the problem with my seat mechanism ie although the 4 inch fits (dependant on how you fit the boards) when you lift the seat base up in seat mode it causes the backrest to move and puts the catches out of alignment resulting in the seat base then not going down properly as the whole mechanism catches on itself. This is overcome by pushing the top of the seat-back to the rear and the base will drop down to its seated position but the latches aren't actually engaged. Doesn't cause me any issues so rather than butcher the hinges to get them to work 100% I will live with that.

I have just fixed this exact same problem, I don't think it's the foam, the springs pull the catches in the wrong direction so they miss the peg they should locate on and instead hit it head on leaving the seat up in the air. Push it down and the catches bend.

The springs by design lay over another peg which is supposed to be located so it pulls the catch into the right place. In the end I rammed pieces of pipe over it building it up to 20mm dia and it now works perfectly every time. Moving the peg 10mm sideways would be the answer, or building up one side by 10mm, but that would probably mean drilling it out and making/welding a new one in place. Bits of pipe was easier.

  13. got mine from Jordans foam

    http://www.foamcushion.co.uk/types.htm

they do laminate foams (firm with soft or memory on the top) but I put 2 1/2" foam on mine and they said it wasn't thick enough to get the benefit out of a laminate.

They are very helpful, got all of mine for a full width R&R and rear section (cut to shape of template I supplied) for under £90 including delivery  ....I went for the Blue firm foam BTW & not used it as a bed yet

  15. if you don't mind searching, and you can live with secondhand, try to find a genuine 100% Latex matress.....this can then be cut to size and thickness....it's the best bedding foam there is....alternatively, buy 1 inch seating foam and have two inch of softer grade glued on top...composites aren't unusual, and any decent foam supplier will do this as per....I'd go for latex if you can find it though

  16. Latex you say....
