Telescopic/expandable pushrod tubes

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by andybay, Jul 9, 2022.

  1. Having sorted the hesitation and cutting out at junctions on my early by replacing the Empi carb with a solex and fitting an original inlet manifold with heat risers, I’m now one step forwards and two steps back.

Two of the pushrod rubes are now leaking oil badly and another two look suspect. Has anyone used the telescopic/expandable tubes before as I’m taking the camper on holiday down to Cornwall next week and won’t have enough time to remove the engine and take the heads off to fit standard tubes.
Are any makes better than others? Even if its just used as a temporary measure, hopefully they will stay oil tight for the week in Cornwall then I can pull out the engine and fit the proper tubes when i’m back.

Its a 1600 type 1 in an early

    Thank you
    Andy

Yup, they’re great for exactly what you have in mind. The big ‘thing’ is to still clean up the mating surfaces to a clinical standard and that should sort things to a reasonable degree. I’ve heard there’s ally ones, steel ones, and even plastic ones and I can’t imagine there being a great difference between them, it’s all about the cleanliness and decent ringy gaskets imho.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,, although I’ve never used them myself, but lots have.:)

  3. Ok, thank you. I think this will be the way to go. Has anyone else got any experience using these? Which ones did you use?

The Empi ones look to be of a good quality and I like the idea of having two nuts to tighten them up with rather than relying on a spring but it seems you can only by them in a set of 8 which is very pricey for a temporary measure.

Does anyone have a part used set kicking about that they can sell me a few tubes out of?
