I'm struggling to find 1st gear. I've done the adjustment in 2nd and move the plate to the left. When stationary it seems to select all 4 gears and reverse, 2nd and reverse work, 3rd and 4th feel a bit stiff. It clicks into 1st but jumps out when I lift the clutch, even if I try and hold the gear lever forwards. I tried moving the gear lever base back half an inch but it made no difference. Please could somebody give me any pointers?
And now the engines running on 3 :(

  2. Move it back a bit more? Does imply the hockey stick in the box isn’t being pushed in enough to engage first.

Did you have the nosecone off of the box to check whether all is well in selector land?

This is my newly built box by Mr Nobody so hopefully I didn't need to open it!
I didn't really know where to start with the adjustment but I've just found this so will start again tomorrow

  4. Sure you’ll work it out. Hopefully there’s nothing wrong with the box.

Dodgy plug lead for 3 cylinders?

I went into Poundland yesterday and walked out with 2 plugs, a screwdriver, and a packet of drawing pins without paying so obviously I don't have teething problems:thumbsup:

The link is a bit odd. How can setting the plate while in reverse work?
I don't believe setting this plate is at all difficult if the slop has been taken out by bushes etc. If it's a twitchy setting something else is worn. I had 4 different gearboxes in my early without ever adjusting the lever or plate.

If it jumps out of gear , that is worse than not having first gear at all.

If you have effectively pushed harder for first gear by moving the plate back and it soon pops out, you soon may be making a stern phonecall, as the gears should latch into place and then hold in ..

As a final check try getting it into gear by pushing on the coupler at the gearbox nose ...make sure that is locked onto the shaft properly with the bolt in the dimple of the gearbox shifter rod.

But I was starting from scratch with everything off the bus. All renewable parts are new (bushes and CSP coupler). So you have to have a starting point, you obvious didn't have to take the gearshift etc off with your 4 gearboxes. The link is supposed to give a starting point as I've failed to get it right so far.

I think you are getting it right.
Check you can find all the gears from the nose cone without the linkage. Jack up one wheel and then put it in gear and start it to check ...or turn the engine over by hand ..

    I'll put it another way.
The collar on the stick, assuming it isn't worn, should slide against the side of the "ski jump" between 1st and 2nd and duck under it for reverse when the lever is pushed down.
I also think you are getting it right which is kind of what I was trying to say - it should be easy, if it's not it's something else.
Jumping out of gear, oh dear don't let it do that often, each time adds some wear until it's rebuild time again so if it was me I'd see what "nobody" has to say and follow his suggestions rather than ours.

  11. What news, Mark?

  12. If - if - you can get to the coupler through the Y-tube (disconnect the front linkage and pull it forwards), could try working it by hand. With the coupler horizontal, pushing all the way in should be first, out one notch for neutral, out one further notch for 2nd.

Yes will try this. I can get to it as I had to the other day when I did the Muff coupler.
