Tappety noise but valve clearences are correct.

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by earlylatebay, Jun 9, 2015.

  1. Why would I get this? seems to be coming from No 3. Compression good, clearences correct, oo6" but getting a slight tappety noise.

    Any thoughts?

Runs well, good compression. Is this the beginning of something serious?

Might be worth looking at the wavy springs on the rocker arm. They might be a bit worn and not pushing the rocker arm hard enough towards the block which it rocks against.

Passport Dodger in the engine bay!?

  6. My type 4 engine has a similar noise and I think it's the cam follower. Head off job, or you could cut the tube and fit an adjustable threaded tube. They're £9 though! Of course you'd have to correctly identify the noisy follower first...

  7. Can you describe what you mean? What tube?

  8. you can do followers on a type 4 engine without taking the head off

Sometimes the rockers wear where they sit against the pedestal. As the pedestal has a gap, there is often a section that doesn't wear. If the rockers are subsequently fitted on a different engine or if the engine has simply been apart and back together, a slight change in adjustment can leave this ridge biffing the end of the gap in the pedestal or riding up over it and clicking back down into the gap.
If you dissemble and swap each rocker to the other side of it's pedestal the noise may go away. I've just done this to mine, I've been following the noise about since I built the engine. Last time I had the heads off I switched head c/w with rockers from side to side and it moved. I did head as well so that if the noise moved (as it did) I could then switch the rockers and see if it moved again (proving it was the rockers) or stayed put (proving it was the head. Luckily it was just clicky rockers. Pretty common, a bit annoying, but not really much to worry about. I was taking the heads off anyway I wouldn't have done all that for a tappety noise.

  10. Push rod tube

  11. Type 4 motors dont need the tubes to be cut or the heads to be removed to change them.
Just remove the rockers and pull them out.

  13. cheers Zed, i will swap the rockers and go from there. The engine has never been apart but it is worth a check.
    Thanks.

Or... take whole assy off each side and swap from head to head to see if the noise moves. If it does, you will have the peace of mind that it's just a noisy rocker and not something more serious. If not...

  15. Will do this. Hope its not a little end bearing!
